How are insulated plasterboards made?
Thermal laminate boards are manufactured by combining insulation material with a plasterboard surface. These boards are constructed with a layer of insulation material, such as expanded polystyrene (EPS insulation board), bonded to a moisture-resistant plasterboard surface.
Once bonded, the adhesives or bonding agents are applied to securely attach the insulation material to the plasterboard surface. The adhesive is applied to either the insulation or the plasterboard, or both, depending on the specific product and manufacturing process.
The boards undergo heat pressing to ensure a strong and uniform connection, with the cured boards finished by trimming the edges to achieve precise dimensions and a smooth surface. Additional treatments such as sanding may be applied to achieve the desired finish.
Then, after going through quality control measures to ensure they meet industry standards, they’re available to buy and be shipped to you.
Why install thermal laminate insulated plasterboards?
Thermal laminate insulated plasterboards are an excellent option when you’re looking to insulate internal walls, ceilings, roofs and floors in residential and commercial buildings. Some key benefits of thermal laminate plasterboard include:
- Improved Thermal Efficiency: They provide excellent thermal insulation, reducing heat loss through walls. By creating a barrier against cold spots and drafts, they help maintain a consistent and comfortable temperature in your living or working space.
- Enhanced Energy Efficiency: By reducing heat loss, thermal insulated boards contribute to overall energy efficiency in your building. They help to create a more sustainable and environmentally friendly space by minimising energy consumption and reducing carbon emissions.
- Soundproofing: Insulated plasterboards have sound-absorbing properties that dampen sound vibrations, reducing noise transmission between rooms. This makes them an ideal soundproof insulation choice for bedrooms, home offices, or any area where noise reduction is desired, creating a quieter and more peaceful environment.
- Moisture Resistance: The moisture-resistant plasterboard surface of thermal laminate boards makes them suitable for areas prone to dampness, such as kitchens or bathrooms. They provide an added layer of protection against moisture and help prevent issues like mould and mildew growth, ensuring a healthier indoor environment.
- Easy Installation: Thermal laminate insulated plasterboards are designed for straightforward installation. They can be easily fixed to timber or metal framing using appropriate fixings, and they can be cut and shaped to fit around corners or irregular spaces. This ease of installation makes the process more efficient and helps achieve a professional finish.
How to fix insulated plasterboard
Installing insulated plasterboard is usually done using the direct bonding method, which helps provide quick and effective insulation solutions that can last for a long time.
Before getting started with the job, you’ll always need to ensure that any walls have been prepared correctly and are completely dry.
You’ll also probably want to mix the drywall adhesive before doing anything else, so that it’s ready for when you need it.
After this, you can then take the following steps to install insulated plasterboard using the direct bond method:
- Mark any spots in the ceiling and masonry to help establish the new wall plane.
- Mark 1200mm marks on the wall in a vertical position to show where the boards should sit.
- Start from a corner of the room, from the window or a door.
- Add adhesive around the perimeter of the wall and around any openings.
- Start cutting the insulated plasterboard around 15mm short of the floor up to the ceiling, then position it with the bottom edge sitting against packing strips.
- Apply just a dab of adhesive to the wall and put the boards into the necessary position, then make sure it aligns properly with the markings on the wall.
- Lift the board to the ceiling edge and hold it in place while the adhesive is setting.
- Add nail fixings around the halfway point of the board, roughly 25mm from the edge.
- Ensure any remaining boards are butted together and fix them using the above process.
In some scenarios, other options when fitting insulated plasterboard include via an adhesive foam or a mechanical fix technique. If you’re unsure which will be the best option for you, our specialists can offer advice or you can consult an external professional for their expert opinion.
