What is insulation board?
Insulation board, also known as foam board, is a rigid material traditionally made from glass fibre or foam plastics. Manufactured as boards for easy transportation, they are usually cut on-site to the specific requirements of the fitter.
What is PIR insulation?
PIR stands for Polyisocyanurate, which is one of the most effective forms of insulation. Products such as Celotex GA4000 Insulation Board are available to buy and they’re easy to install, which is a major plus point of PIR insulation.
PIR remains a firm favourite with those in the insulation industry, mostly due to it being effective and easy to work with. They also don’t sag over time so are great from a longevity point of view too.
What types of insulation boards are there?
Rigid foam boards are sold as sheets that can be purchased and then cut to size. There are three main types of Rigid Board Insulation and they are:
PIR/PUR Boards
They have an aluminium backing and are made from closed cells which minimise water absorption. PIR boards have a higher heat resistance so they are safer in the event of a fire. Celotex GA4000 Insulation Board is a great example of this type of product.
They are also made with closed cells to reduce water absorption. Although the boards are thin they have the advantage of a higher R-Value, but the disadvantage is that they can work out to be more expensive than other forms of insulation.
Expanded Polystyrene (EPS)
This is the cheapest of the three boards and it has an open cell structure which does mean that water vapour can get through. It is made from polystyrene balls which are moulded together to create a block. Prices vary depending on which type of insulation you choose.
How much does insulation save?
The amount you can save by installing insulation in your home varies depending on the type of insulation that you go for, but the average for each is as follows:
How does insulation help the environment?
Insulating homes properly decreases the amount of energy and fuel needed to heat the building, therefore reducing carbon emissions.
Energy in homes accounts for around 14% of UK greenhouse gas emissions according to the Committee on Climate Change, and installing proper insulation can help reduce this and make your home much more energy efficient.
How long does insulation last?
As a general rule, insulation should last for decades without needing to be replaced. Depending on the exact type of insulation, it can last anywhere between 20 and 100 years.
If you start to notice things like your home becoming colder than usual, it may be worth inspecting your current insulation to see if it needs to be replaced.
