Household energy could be 'unaffordable' in three years
30/05/2012
Britain is only three years away from breaking point with regard to the soaring price of energy bills for many households, according to the latest research from uSwitch.com.This underlines the importance of thermal insulation and other energy-saving measures for homeowners keen to cut down on their bills, with prices expected to continue to rise over the coming years.
If the current trend towards increases goes on, annual bills for an average household could hit £1,582 by 2015 and £2,776 by 2018.
Almost a third of Britons already feel energy prices are unaffordable, meaning a further jump could represent a serious tipping point for a large number of homes.
Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at uSwitch.com, said the UK is "hurtling towards a cliff" with regard to the cost of heating and electricity.
Consumers should be told how their bills are likely to increase so they can install "energy efficiency measures to protect themselves against higher prices", added Ms Robinson.
YouGen recently suggested that ensuring a property is fully insulated is a good way to cut down on bills.
